Focus on who you are, where you are
Often when we are at work, we are thinking about going home. Then, when we at home, we are thinking about work. When we are with a group of friends, we are texting people who aren’t there. Then, when we are with those people we were texting, we are texting someone else. It seems as if we aren’t living our lives in the space we inhabit and thinking about something or somewhere else.
My challenge was to overcome what I just described…sort of. My issue was that all I thought about was work. When I was at work, I thought of work. When I was at home, I thought of work. When I was on vacation, you guessed it, I thought of work. Coming from a very poor upbringing my only goal in life was to be successful. But, at what cost? At some point I realized that I was robbing my family of my presence. I was also robbing myself from having a fulfilled life.
There was a cure. I started to live my life in blocks of time with assigned roles. Instead of only being a hard worker in my career, I shifted the way I thought of myself thoughout the day. I became a father, a husband, a Jiu Jitsu Instructor, a Jiu Jitsu student…even, a tourist. Yep! When I’m on vacation, I’m on vacation. No more working twenty-four hours a day and neglecting the rest of my life.
Success is about achieving your goals across the board. If you learn to focus on who you are, where you are, then you an achieve success in all aspects of your life. Not only will you be a goal achiever, but you will also be fulfilled.
