There can only be one you

Why are we so special? Have you ever thought about that question? This morning, while planning my day, an answer came to me. I realized that many of my tasks were things that only I could complete. My guess is that your list of tasks is filled with things that only you can complete. Even if our lists have some similarities, only we can complete our respective lists. This may seem a bit simplistic and underwhelming as an answer. So, let me explain.

We all have people who we affect because of our specific gifts, talents and situation. We impact our family, our friends, our co-workers, our clients…the people that are important to us. Only we can impact those people in the way that we do. I know that no one else will pay for my daughter’s college, no one else will bring my wife flowers to brighten her day, and no one else will run my meetings the way that I do.

There is an old saying regarding working out. No one can do your push-ups for you. You have to do the work. In the same way, no one else has the responsibilities that you do. You are the only one who can accomplish the tasks on your list. Although it might not seem as a big deal, it is. Whether you know it or not, you impact those around you when you are the best version of yourself, and the world needs you.

In the words of Howard Thurman, “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” You come alive when you live as your best self. You come alive when you make the lives around you better. Always remember, that there can only be one you and that you are a blessing to the world.
